First New Tyne and Wear Metro Goes on Test in Switzerland

The first new class 555 for the Tyne and Wear metro went on test at the Stadler test track in Erlen, Switzerland.

The first unit will be put through numerous tests, assessing speed, safety, build quality and other important factors.

Once it has completed testing in Switzerland, some metro drivers will get the chance to get a feel for the train before it reaches the UK.

The first unit is expected to arrive in the UK in December and will then be tested on the Tyne and Wear metro test track. The new trains are planned to be in operation by late 2023.

“It’s brilliant to see the first new metro train moving along the Stadler test track,” says Michael Richardson, head of fleet and depot renewal at Nexus. He goes on too add “This is a really important phase of the project as the first few units undergo rigorous testing before we start taking delivery of them.”
