Metro back in service after vital repairs to Pallion substation completed

When floods hit the north east in November of last year, a crucial substation for the Sunderland section of the Tyne and Wear Metro was destroyed. This caused power, which was being drawn from the national grid, to cut out and effectively halt half of the metro network.

Since then, teams have been working hard to fully reconstruct the entire substation at Pallion and get the trains running again; trains resumed service on the 13th January.

John Alexander, who is the operations manager for Metro, had this to say about the repairs: “We are pleased to resume services on the line between Park Lane and South Hylton, and are grateful to our customers for their patience while Network Rail have undertaken the repairs.

“There was significant water damage to the substation at Pallion, which has been completely rebuilt on schedule by Network Rail in what was a complex project.“
